Frankenstein Pumpkin Carving Stencils
Jack O’ Lanterns had originally been intended to frighten away the restless evil spirits that were purported to be roaming the earth and causing all kinds of mischief. Jack O’ Lanterns had therefore been created to be as fierce and scary looking as possible. It is no wonder then that bats, witches, monsters, haunted houses, skeletons, ghosts, mummies, wolf men, Dracula and Frankensteins have all been adopted into or included in the pumpkin carving repertoire. “And why would Frankenstein fit into that group?” you might ask. Well, give me a few minutes of your time and I will be happy to tell you.
“Frankenstein” is the title of a novel written by a very young British author, Mary Shelley, in the early part of the 1800s. This novel talks about a scientist, Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who through a strong background in chemistry and alchemy discovers how to artificially breathe life into inanimate objects and produces a creature that looks like a man but is much larger, much stronger and much more powerful. This creature is described as being eight feet tall, having sallow yellowish skin and eyes with long black hair, carrying a large flat head over a thick neck with two electrodes on either side and a massive scar across a very high forehead. Upon viewing his own hideous creation, Dr. Frankenstein rejects it as a foul creature, a monster, a fiend and a wretch and flees in fear. Having been rejected by his creator, the creature roams around and encounters other humans who also fear and reject him. The creature then becomes bitter and resentful and murder’s Dr. Frankenstein’s brother in revenge. Having committed murder, the creature is now perceived as not only repugnant but also evil with more reasons to fear.
This novel had gained immediate popularity and has been given the honor of being the first in the now popular mad scientist genre. Furthermore, in more modern times and until this very day, Dr. Victor Frankenstein who was originally depicted as a kindly scientist with good intentions has been transformed into a sinister and shady character and the creature he produced has been even more dehumanized and given more dangerous capabilities.
Interestingly enough and in obvious error, “Frankenstein” has been referred to in recent years as the creature that was created by the mad scientist rather than the scientist himself. Therefore, the word Frankenstein brings to mind a universally recognized ferocious monster to be dreaded.
